What is a crown?
A crown (sometimes called a cap) is a custom-made cover that goes over a tooth. It restores the size, shape, and strength of a tooth that's been damaged or worn down.
When you might need one:
- A tooth has a large cavity that's too big for a filling.
- A tooth has cracked, chipped, or broken.
- You've had a root canal and the tooth needs protection.
- A tooth is worn down from grinding.
- You want to change the shape or color of a tooth for cosmetic reasons.
- You have an implant and need a crown on top of it.
How long it lasts:
A well-made crown typically lasts 10 to 20 years or longer with good care. Brushing, flossing, and regular checkups make a big difference.
What is a bridge?
A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. It uses the teeth on either side of the gap as anchors and "bridges" the space with a replacement tooth that matches the rest of your smile.
When a bridge makes sense:
- You're missing one or more teeth in a row.
- The teeth on either side of the gap are healthy and strong enough to support the bridge.
- You want a fixed solution (not removable).
- An implant isn't the right fit for your situation.
Bridge or implant? Both are great options. Implants tend to last longer and don't involve the teeth next to the gap. Bridges are usually faster and less expensive up front. We'll walk you through which one fits you best. More on implants here.
What to expect
Crowns and bridges typically take two visits, a couple of weeks apart.
- Exam and X-ray. We confirm a crown or bridge is the right fit.
- Preparation visit. The tooth (or teeth, for a bridge) is shaped and an impression is taken. We use the impression to create a crown or bridge that fits your mouth exactly.
- Temporary in place. You leave with a temporary crown or bridge while the permanent one is made.
- Fit and place. A couple of weeks later, you come back. We check the fit, color, and bite, then permanently bond the crown or bridge in place.
- Follow up. We check it at your next routine visit to make sure everything is sitting well.
Cost and insurance
Crowns and bridges are usually covered by most dental insurance plans, often at 50%. Coverage varies, so we'll check ahead of your visit and tell you the out-of-pocket cost up front.
