What is the difference between clear aligners and braces?
Clear aligners are clear, so you don't really notice them unless you're looking closely. Braces, of course, are more noticeable. Even if you get clear, or what we call ceramic braces, they're still going to show.
Another difference can be the treatment experience and treatment time, although that depends on the individual case. From my experience, I used to do a lot of braces, and over time I started doing more clear aligner treatment. I mostly do Invisalign, but I also work with other clear aligner systems. I like having different options available because different systems may work well for different cases.
I've been doing this since 2006, and I've had a lot of good results with clear aligners. That's why I eventually stopped doing braces and focused on clear aligner treatment.
Also, with clear aligners, we don't have the same types of issues that can happen with braces, such as a bracket coming loose or a wire poking you. I've found that a lot of my patients adapt well to clear aligners, and that's why this is what I do most of the time now. At this point, I solely provide clear aligner treatment.

What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a system of clear, custom-made plastic aligners that gradually move your teeth into a straighter position. You wear each set for about 1 to 2 weeks, then switch to the next one in the series. Most people complete treatment in 6 to 18 months, depending on how much movement is needed.
Unlike traditional metal braces, the aligners are removable. You take them out to eat, drink anything other than water, brush, and floss. Most of the time, they're in.

What to expect
- Consultation. We look at your bite, talk about what you'd like to change, and confirm Invisalign will work for you.
- 3D scan. We scan your teeth digitally — no goopy molds. The scan becomes the blueprint for your custom aligners.
- Treatment plan. You'll see a preview of your projected results before you commit. We'll quote you a clear price up front.
- Aligners arrive. Your first set comes in about 2 to 4 weeks. We make sure they fit and show you how to wear them.
- Switch every 1 to 2 weeks. Each new set moves your teeth a little further. You'll come in for quick checkups every 6 to 8 weeks.
- Finish. When treatment is done, you'll wear retainers to keep your new smile in place. We'll fit you with these too.
Cost and insurance
Invisalign treatment costs vary based on how much movement is needed. Most cases fall into a similar range as traditional braces. We'll always give you a clear, complete price before treatment begins.
- Many dental insurance plans cover part of Invisalign treatment, especially if you have orthodontic benefits.
