What is a root canal?

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When that tissue gets infected (usually because of a deep cavity, a crack, or trauma to the tooth) it causes pain and can lead to a bigger problem if it's not treated.

A root canal is the procedure that removes the infected tissue, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it up. The tooth stays in place. You get to keep your natural tooth instead of pulling it.

Signs you might need a root canal

Common signs include:

  • Sharp pain when chewing or biting down
  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, even after the temperature is gone
  • A tooth that's darkening or changing color
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gum near a specific tooth
  • A small bump on the gum that looks like a pimple
  • A deep cavity or a tooth with a known crack

Not every painful tooth needs a root canal. Some can be saved with a simple filling, and a few are too far gone and need to be extracted. We'll take an X-ray, look at the tooth carefully, and tell you honestly what your options are.

What to expect

  1. Exam and X-ray. We look at the tooth, take an X-ray, and confirm a root canal is the right call.
  2. Numbing. We numb the area completely before we start. You won't feel sharp pain during the procedure, just light pressure.
  3. Cleaning the tooth. We make a small opening in the top of the tooth, remove the infected tissue, and clean the inside thoroughly.
  4. Sealing. We fill the cleaned space with a soft material that keeps bacteria out.
  5. Restoration. Most teeth that have a root canal also need a crown to protect them long-term. We'll plan and schedule that with you.
  6. Follow up. We check the tooth at your next visit to make sure everything is healing well.

The procedure itself doesn't hurt because the area is fully numbed. What hurts is the infection, and that's the reason you're getting a root canal in the first place. After the procedure, most patients feel immediate relief from the pain that brought them in.

Most root canals are done in one or two visits, about 60 to 90 minutes each. We'll tell you ahead of time exactly what to expect.

A tooth that's had a root canal is more brittle than a healthy tooth and can crack under normal chewing. A crown protects the tooth so it lasts. Skipping the crown is one of the main reasons a root-canaled tooth fails later.

With a proper crown and good care, a tooth that's had a root canal can last the rest of your life.

You can, but we usually recommend saving your natural tooth if possible. Pulling a tooth leaves a gap that affects your bite over time, and replacing it with an implant or bridge costs more than a root canal would have.

Most patients go right back to their day. You might want to take it easy with what you eat for the rest of the day, but you're not out of commission.
