At Smile Dental Center in Waipahu, we want every patient to feel confident about how they pay for care, whether that is through a membership, a payment plan, or insurance. If you do have dental insurance, there is a good chance you are not using all of it. A lot of people leave benefits on the table every year without realizing it. Here is a plain-English rundown of how to make the most of what you have.
1. Know what your plan covers
Every plan is a little different, so it helps to know the basics of yours:
- Annual maximum: the most your plan will pay in a year. Anything you do not use usually disappears when the year resets.
- Deductible: what you pay yourself before your plan starts chipping in.
- Covered services: not everything is covered, so it is worth knowing what is.
Knowing these three things makes it much easier to plan ahead and avoid surprise bills.
2. Use it before you lose it
Most plans reset every year, and any benefits you have not used simply go away. Say your plan covers up to $1,500 a year and you have only used $500. That is $1,000 of care you have already paid for sitting unused. If you have been putting off a crown or a cleaning, the end of the year is a good time to take care of it. If you have already met your deductible, even better.
3. Do not skip your cleanings and checkups
Most plans cover routine cleanings, exams, and X-rays at 100 percent. These visits are where we catch the small stuff before it turns into the expensive stuff, and they usually cost you nothing. Keeping up with them is one of the easiest wins there is, for your smile and your wallet.
4. Plan bigger treatments with the calendar in mind
If you know you have major work coming, like crowns, implants, or dentures, a little timing can stretch your benefits further. Splitting the work across two calendar years lets you use two years of coverage for one treatment plan. Start before the year ends, finish after it resets. We are happy to help you map it out.
5. Watch for waiting periods
Some plans make you wait before they will cover certain treatments, especially bigger procedures. Waiting periods can run anywhere from a few months to a year. If you are switching plans or signing up for a new one, check for these so they do not catch you off guard.
6. Remember your FSA or HSA
If you have a Flexible Spending Account or Health Savings Account, you can put those dollars toward dental costs. FSA money often expires at the end of the year, so it is worth using up any balance before the deadline. We accept both.
7. No insurance? You still have good options.
Plenty of our patients do not have dental insurance, and that is completely fine. Our Smile Plan is an in-house membership made for exactly this. For a flat yearly fee it covers your cleanings, exams, and X-rays, plus a member discount on other treatment. We also offer financing through CareCredit, Alphaeon, and Cherry so you can spread out the cost of bigger work.
For folks who do carry insurance, we accept most PPO dental plans too. If you are not sure whether yours works with us, just ask and we will help you sort it out.
8. Ask us anything
Insurance can be confusing, and you do not have to figure it out alone. If you have questions about your coverage or how to get the most from it, text or call us at (808) 671-5555 or send us a message. We are glad to walk through it with you.
A few common questions
What does dental insurance usually cover? Most plans cover preventive care like checkups, cleanings, and X-rays, and cover part of basic work like fillings. Bigger treatments like crowns, implants, and dentures are usually covered at a lower percentage, depending on your plan.
What is a deductible? It is the amount you pay yourself before your plan starts covering treatments. Once you have met it, your plan picks up its share. We can give you an estimate so you know what to expect.
How often can I use my benefits? Most plans cover a checkup and cleaning every six months. We will help you confirm what yours allows.
What if I do not have insurance? No problem at all. Ask us about the Smile Plan and our financing options. Everyone deserves a healthy smile, and we will help you find a way to make it work.
The bottom line
Your benefits are there to help you stay healthy, but only if you use them. If it has been a while, or you have coverage about to reset, come see us. And if you do not have insurance at all, the Smile Plan might be just the thing. Either way, we will help you find a way to take care of your smile that fits your budget.
