Most of us think about cavities when we think about our teeth. But your gums matter just as much. They're what hold your teeth in place.
When plaque and bacteria build up along and under the gumline, they can cause gum disease. It's really common, it often starts quietly, and it can do real damage if nobody catches it. The good news is that there's a simple, non-surgical fix for many people: a deep cleaning.
Here's what that means, why we might recommend one, and what it's actually like.
What is a deep cleaning?

Your dentist might call it "scaling and root planing." We'll just call it a deep cleaning.
A regular cleaning takes care of plaque and tartar on the parts of your teeth you can see, above the gums. A deep cleaning goes a step further. It cleans out the buildup that's hiding below the gumline, where your toothbrush and floss can't reach.
Here's how that buildup happens. Plaque that doesn't get brushed away hardens into tartar. Tartar is a magnet for bacteria. Over time those bacteria irritate your gums, and the gums start to pull away from your teeth. That leaves little gaps where even more bacteria can move in. A deep cleaning clears all of that out so your gums can heal.
It happens in two parts.
Part 1: Cleaning under the gums. Your hygienist removes the plaque, tartar, and bacteria from your teeth and just below the gumline. They use small hand tools and a gentle vibrating cleaner to get into those hard-to-reach spots.
Part 2: Smoothing the roots. Next, the roots of your teeth get smoothed out. Rough spots are where plaque loves to stick, so a smooth surface makes it harder for bacteria to come back. It also helps your gums snug back up against your teeth and close those gaps.
How do you know if you need one?
Gum disease usually sneaks up on people. A lot of our patients don't notice anything until it's been going on for a while. Keep an eye out for:
- Red, puffy, or tender gums
- Bleeding when you brush or floss
- Bad breath that won't go away
- Gums that look like they're shrinking back
- Teeth that feel a little loose
- Your bite feeling different when you chew
If any of those sound familiar, don't wait for it to get worse. Catching gum disease early is so much easier on your gums, your teeth, and the bone that holds them in place.
Why it's worth doing
It stops gum disease from getting worse. Clearing out the bacteria under your gums takes away what's causing the problem.
Your gums calm down. Once the buildup is gone, the redness, swelling, and bleeding usually settle down, and your gums feel a lot more comfortable.
It helps your gums reattach. Smoother roots give your gums something clean to hold onto, so those gaps can start to shrink.
It helps you keep your teeth. Gum disease is one of the most common reasons adults lose teeth. Treating it early protects what keeps your teeth steady.
Brushing and flossing work better. With healthy gums, your everyday routine at home actually does its job.
What to expect at your visit

Depending on how much cleaning you need, we may do it in one visit or split it up over a couple.
We'll numb the area first so you're comfortable, and we'll check in with you the whole way through. Our hygienists take their time. If you need a break, just let them know. No rushing.
Most people go right back to their normal day afterward. Your gums might feel a little tender or sensitive for a few days while they heal. That's normal, and it passes.
Taking care of your gums afterward
A deep cleaning gives your gums a fresh start. What you do next keeps them healthy. We'll usually suggest:
- Brushing twice a day with a soft toothbrush
- Flossing (or using little between-the-teeth brushes) every day
- Using a special mouth rinse if we recommend one
- Coming back for your follow-up visits so we can make sure your gums are healing
- Skipping tobacco, since it slows healing way down
Keep that up, and the bacteria have a much harder time coming back.
Healthy gums, healthy smile
A deep cleaning is one of the best ways to treat gum disease without surgery. It clears out the bacteria, calms your gums down, and helps protect your smile for the long run.
The easiest way to stay ahead of gum problems is to keep up with your regular cleanings. If you don't have dental insurance, our Smile Plan includes two cleanings a year plus exams and X-rays, so it's easy to stay on track. You can also check out our financing options if you're worried about cost.
